As was reported last month, the Orioles are looking for a new public address announcer, and at Saturday’s FanFest, you could have your shot at being the voice of Camden Yards.
Maybe it's a long shot, but it's still a shot. The Orioles will hold PA announcer tryouts from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at FanFest. Now, before you start practicing your best Rex Barney, know that the Orioles have already received more than 300 applications for the job, which is being vacated by David McGowan, the PA announcer for the past 14 years. Like everything else at FanFest, the team hopes the booth is there to enhance the fan’s experience. But they are keeping there ears open. And who knows? If a diamond in the rough steps into the Baltimore Convention Center with all the credentials, that person could be the next voice of the Orioles.

Greenville man going into Kentucky Motorsports Hall of Fame

GREENVILLE — During the normal work week, Butch Krieger is an account manager for Plumbers Supply Company in Louisville.
But fans of tractor pulls, truck pulls and drag racing know the Greenville resident for another job he performs. For 38 years, the 64-year-old Krieger has been a public-address announcer at drag races and tractor and truck pulls throughout the country, which includes Southern Indiana and Kentucky. He is probably best-known for being the longtime announcer for the Championship Tractor Pull at the annual National Farm Machinery Show at Freedom Hall in Louisville. Krieger will be announcing the popular pull for the 33rd straight year Feb. 15-18.
Krieger’s popularity and longevity have helped him earn a prestigious honor. This coming July, Krieger will be inducted into the Kentucky Motorsports Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the Swope’s Cars of Yesteryear Museum in Elizabethtown, Ky.
Krieger found out from his son Miles that he was chosen for induction into the Hall of Fame last week.

Texas Rangers' PA announcer on Grand Ole Opry days, why he changed his name

Chuck Morgan has occupied the catbird's seat as the Rangers' public address announcer for 29 of the last 30 seasons. Now, he's taking much of what he's witnessed and his baseball expertise to television as the Rangers representative on MLB Network's first game show -- Baseball IQ.

The show is what you might expect -- a trivia and minutiae quiz featuring representatives of all 30 Major League teams plus MLB.com and the Hall of Fame. The one-on-one matches between the 32 baseball know-it-alls will be played in NCAA Tournament-like brackets.

The 30-minute taped shows debut at 7 p.m. Tuesday and will air in 31 episodes through Feb. 23.

Morgan opens up against an assistant clubhouse manager representing the Los Angeles Angels, who just happens to have a law degree.

For the record, Morgan arrived in Arlington from the minor league Nashville Sounds in 1983. His primary jobs in Nashville were as a country music DJ and an announcer at the Grand Ole Opry. His television résumé includes local sports anchoring and "cornfield" appearances on Hee Haw.

In his final year in Nashville, Morgan was named the Country Music Association's "Major Market Disc Jockey of the Year." In 2001 and 2003, The Sporting News recognized him as the premier public address announcer in the majors. read the full story here

Rob Alberino, vice president of media and marketing for the Kansas City Chiefs, says he missed three things when he vacated a similar position with the Eagles and relocated in the midwest in 2003:

Baker, a West Deptford Township resident whose peerless broadcasting career includes 27 years as public address announcer for the Eagles and 40 years for the Phillies, will be honored for career achievements Friday, Feb. 10 in the Eynon Ballroom of Rowan University’s Chamberlain Student Center.Longest tenured PA announcer in major league baseball, Baker started with the Phillies in 1972 and has been on-field voice for five World Series (two championships) and two All-Star games.

In the near future, for the first time ever, a booming voice will come over the loudspeakers in Fort Myers, Fla., and welcome Red Sox fans to their new spring training facility. But who will that voice be?

About 100 people came to an open casting call as the Red Sox began their search for their first-ever public address announcer at JetBlue Park. Now, the team is narrowing the field down to 10 finalists to find the voice of the Sox' new spring training stadium.

"We wanted to do something that got the local community involved and excited," Red Sox director of Florida operations Katie Haas told NBC-2 in Fort Myers. "We'll go through all of them and go from there."

Each of the 100 candidates was called in to read a script on-camera in the hopes of getting the job. Some had the experience to back it up, others were trying something new. But if they wanted to make it to the next round of auditions, they all needed to have a couple of distinct qualifications. read the full story

It’s IceDogs hockey night in St. Catharines and public address announcer Rod Mawhood has arrived for work in the main lobby of the Jack Gatecliff Arena. It’s 4:40 p.m.

The six-foot-five St. Catharines native is wearing a blue suit with a gold shirt and matching tie. He often wears an IceDogs jersey with his name and the number 07 on the back on game night, but tonight is special. It’s New Year’s Eve.

Rod’s first stop is at the IceDog’s ticket office where he picks up a walkie talkie. “I’ve got to make sure that it is fully charged,” he says. I’ll soon find out why. He also picks up his 11-page script for the evening and a summary sheet that lists the order in which items are to be announced during the evening.

David Diamante began announcing boxing matches 10 years ago. Since then, he has done work for ESPN and HBO. Well before that time, he stopped cutting his hair. Diamante is set to become the next voice of the Nets when they move to Brooklyn, and to say he is an interesting character would be a massive understatement. His dread locks have been growing since 1988, and Diamante said he has absolutely no idea when he will decide to cut them off.

“There was a change in my life, and it felt right, and I just stopped cutting it,” he told the New York Times. “Will I cut it tomorrow? Maybe. Will I cut it later today? Maybe. Probably not. David Diamante -- who owns the popular Diamante’s Brooklyn Cigar Lounge in Fort Greene and has announced pro and amateur boxing internationally the past decade -- has been tapped to become the new public address announcer for the soon-to-be Brooklyn Nets, of which rapper Jay Z is a minority owner.
The 40-year-old Bushwick man with epic dreadlocks was chosen from more than 400 people – mostly regular Joes with big aspirations – who competed for the dream gig during a series of open tryouts held in September and October. “I am so pumped and honored! This is going to be amazing,” an excited Diamante told the Post yesterday.

Florida Citrus Sports names new PA Announcer for Bowl games

Congratulations to Michael Caldwell who was selected as Florida Citrus Sports’ new PA announcer. Caldwell, 47, replaces retired announcer and 30-year veteran Bob Matheison and will make his debut at the Champs Sports Bowl, Dec. 29.

Caldwell, a former high school coach and teacher in South Carolina, beat out four other finalists including UCF announcer Erik Kohler, Brighthouse sports anchor David Baumann, voiceover artist Jeff Michaels and high school announcer Brian Dampier.

He was picked by a panelists of judges including Orlando Sentinel columnists George Diaz and yours truly (Shannon J. Owens), WFTV Channel 9. anchor Bob Opsahl, and Florida Citrus Sports executive committee members Michael Champagne, Larry Ruffin and Pat Bishop.

We're not sure this will have a huge impact on the financial future of the Lake County Fielders (independent; North American League), but former PA announcer Gregory Koeppen has filed suit in Lake County Circuit Court against ownership for nonpayment.

“It is unfortunate I have to file a lawsuit against Rich [Ehrenreich] and the Fielders, but after repeated attempts to collect the money I am owed as stadium public address announcer for the team, I am left with no other choice,” Koeppen said in a statement. “I supported the team from the beginning as I thought it would be a great tourist and local attraction for Lake County, unfortunately Rich has made it an embarrassment not only for Lake County, but for all of baseball.” read the full story here

Tom Lamaine is new Sixers PA announcer

Tom Lamaine, who served as a television broadcaster for the Sixers in the 1970s will become the team's new PA announcer this season, Sixers CEO Adam Aron confirmed this afternoon.

Lamaine worked alongside Bill Campbell from 1970 to 1976 broadcasting Sixers games for WPHL-17. For the past several years the former CBS3 meteorologist has been the unofficial back-up announcer for Matt Cord, though Cord, a 93.3 WMMR DJ has never missed a Sixers game.

Pac-12 relieves PA announcer Don Essig, it might rain in Autzen Stadium

The Pac-12 is giving Autzen Stadium a serious makeover for Friday night's first-ever Pac-12 championship game, and one of its moves was to relieve longtime stadium announcer Don Essig of his full game duties in an attempt to make the game somewhat more neutral.

Essig has been the PA announcer in Autzen Stadium since 1968, and his voice is among the most recognizable in the state of Oregon. In a longtime tradition, the fans join Essig prior to the start of every home game in saying, "it never rains in Autzen Stadium."

University of Oregon athletic department spokesman Dave Williford says that he isn't sure yet if Essig will be allowed to lead the Ducks faithful in the saying, but he did tell the media "Don will be involved in some of the pregame announcements."

In the shadows of the Belt Parkway and the Rockaways sits the historic Floyd Bennett Field. A remnant of an airplane hangar from years gone by, Floyd Bennett Field now houses the Aviation Sports and Events Center, a family fun spot for children of all ages.

The center includes a regulation size skating rink, and since 2009 has been the home to the single-A professional hockey team–the Brooklyn Aviators. The Aviators play in the Federal Hockey League and are affiliated with the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers.

As with any minor league franchise, players are looking to reach the majors, or find need to find their way back to the big time—the NHL.

When Larry Schmitt was in the second grade, Harrison Hill elementary physical education teacher Shirley Nichols wrote in his report card, ``Larry talks about hockey non-stop. I bet Larry could talk a puck into a net.''

She must have been psychic as Thursday night Schmitt will call his 500th game as the Komets' public address announcer.

``I'd love to find her just to go, `Hey, you were right,' '' Schmitt said. ``It's in the blood. It's the one constant in my life that makes you happy, so I go all right, I'm just going to keep doing it.''

BUFFALO, NY - (WKBW) A Sabres spokesman has confirmed to Eyewitness Sports that longtime Memorial Auditorium public address announcer Milt Ellis has died at the age of 81.

Known to many simply as “The Voice of the Aud,” Milt Ellis was the Sabres public address announcer for 26 seasons at the Memorial Auditorium. Ellis became a fixture in the old Aud as he sat between the two penalty boxes, with his unmistakable voice announcing some of the most memorable moments in Sabres history. Before the Sabres came along in 1970, Ellis spent several years prior as the PA voice of the AHL’s Buffalo Bisons – a job he took as a favor to his friend, long-time Bisons PR man Stan Barron. A graduate of Syracuse University, Ellis also spent more than 40 years working for Buffalo-based radio station WDCX.

Spychala ready for gig with Scarlet Knights

One day in the late 1970s, when Kevin MacConnell was a newcomer to the airwaves at Rutgers University’s student-run radio station, he was assigned to call a women’s basketball game with upperclassman Paul Spychala.

“It was my first game, and I didn’t say a word for the first four minutes,” MacConnell recalled. “I’m nervous and tongue-tied and he’s carrying me. Finally somebody comes into the game and we can’t find this girl on the roster. Paul looks at me and says, ‘Must be a player to be named later.’ ”

With the ice broken, MacConnell eased into his new gig. Over time he worked his way up to become WRSU’s sports director. Now he is Rutgers’ deputy director of athletes, and when the Scarlet Knights were in the market for a new basketball public address announcer this offseason, he knew exactly who to call. read the full story here

Announcer Harry Kargenian makes donation for new speakers at Bob Mathias Stadium

If fans watching the Bell Game football action at Bob Mathias Stadium last week noticed a change to the visiting side's stadium light poles, it wasn't because the lighting was better.

What was likely more noticeable was the upgraded sound of long-time public address announcer Harry Kargenian.

The Tulare Joint Union High School District installed two new 2-by-2-foot full-range speakers on the stadium's east side light poles, an upgrade in part made possible because of Kargenian himself.

Kargenian, who has announced at Tulare Union for 40 years and is a TUHS alumnus, donated $945 toward the $2,252 purchase of the new additions to Bob Mathias Stadium's sound system.

Schneider hangs up microphone at Emmett High School

After 20 seasons, an era at Emmett High School has come to a close. With a simple, "I'm signing off now, it's been fun," Al, the voice of Huskie football for the last two decades, switched off the microphone in the Huskie Stadium press box for the final time.

"It was time to step down," Schneider said. "It's really fun and I want to give somebody else the chance to try it."

The retired EHS English teacher took over the public address announcer's chair in 1991, shortly after arriving in Emmett. At that time, the public announcement duties fell to student volunteers.

"They would just grab whatever kid they could find," Schneider said "They'd be up there goofing around like kids do."

Jimmie Guyton is Bulldogs' new guy behind the mic

After hearing 30 auditions from interested individuals in the Charleston community, The Citadel named Jimmie Guyton as its new public address announcer for Bulldogs basketball.

Guyton's hire caps a two-week search, during which potential announcers had the opportunity to try out Oct. 24 at McAlister Field House.

The Summerville native worked for nine years as a private disc jockey, and he has experience working as a public address announcer, most recently for softball and volleyball events at Ashley Ridge High School. Prior to that, Guyton served as the PA announcer for Fort Dorchester High School softball games. Guyton is a plant safety specialist for Alcoa in Goose Creek.

The Canton Charge is looking for a Public Address Announcer. The PA announcer’s duties will include announcing visitor’s starting lineups, all game action, public address announcements, contests, and other duties as assigned.

The PA announcer will be the main voice of the Canton Charge while in the arena. The PA announcer will work closely with the game presentation team to create the most entertaining game experience in the NBA D-League.

Requirements:

You should have strong vocal talent
You should be spontaneous and quick witted
You should have a unique and definitive personality
You must have a strong knowledge of NBA D-League basketball; including rules and players
You must feel comfortable announcing to large crowds on a microphone
You must be able to attend all home Charge games and arrive two hours before game time for each game
You should be receptive to both positive and negative feedback
You will work closely with the Director of Game Presentation
You must feel comfortable working with NBA D-League referees and NBA D-League statisticians
Experience working as a PA announcer, in television, in radio or on stage is preferred.

PA Announcer Calls Student "Hitler"

Papillion South halfback Chance Adolf is a key component of the Titan's Class A football playoff hopes. But he was the target of an unfortunate slip by the Westside public address announcer Friday night. The PA announcer referred to the Sophomore, as Hitler. The comment was made over the loudspeaker system.

"People were offended...by the comment that was made and concerned that a comment would be made in today's day and age," said Annette Eyeman of Papillion-LaVista Schools.

"He really feels horrible about this situation. Immediately when he realized what he had said he went on the PA system to apologize. B-Daht brings his "A" game to WSSU football

One of the constants at Bowman Gray Stadium the last few years has been the public-address announcer B-Daht, who in his real life is named Brian McLaughlin.

B-Daht, a 2006 graduate of Winston-Salem State, first started calling games both basketball and football games as a senior in 2005. To say he’s come a long way would be an understatement.

When former athletics director Chico Caldwell hired him he turned him loose on the crowd and in WSSU’s first home game in 2005 against Catawba was rough on the ears. He made fun of the Catawba cheerleaders, mocked the officials and made announcements when the quarterback was calling signals.

B-Daht, who has been a disc jockey at 102 JAMZ, has grown up a lot and does a great job of keeping the fans entertained. I’ve always found him entertaining and he had to be at times when the Rams were 1-10 three years ago. read the rest of John Dell's story here

Bob Smith’s favorite games were the ones that featured championship implications for the Hudsonville football team. That’s when the crowd would get excited and Smith’s Friday night job of nearly 40 years really turned into a passion. Vanderbilt changes public address announcer in midseason

Steve Willard has been hired as the home public address announcer for Vanderbilt football and men’s basketball games, effective immediately. Willard, who has called baseball games for years, will be working Saturday’s football game with Arkansas.

He replaces Chip Hoback, who had handled P.A. duties for football and men’s basketball for nine seasons.

“Chip has done an admirable job for us,” Vanderbilt director of sales and marketing Steve Walsh said. “This was an opportunity for us to standardize across our sports.”

The Citadel's open tryouts for a new public-address announcer at basketball games Monday night were kind of like American Idol -- if you subtract all the glitz and glamour, J. Lo and Steven Tyler and millions of TV viewers.

The fundamentals were there, though: Nervous contestants facing a panel of judges while trying to safely pronounce "Dylan Setzekorn for three!"

Twenty-one hopefuls, all male, turned out at McAlister Field House to try out for the job of replacing longtime Citadel announcer Sam Evans, who is retiring this year after 27 years at courtside.

The job pays $50 dollars a game for 14 home games this season, and the winner will debut before what's sure to be one of the biggest crowds of the season -- the regular season home opener Nov. 16 against Clemson.

If you think you can utter that phrase with the requisite enthusiasm, The Citadel might have a job for you.

The military school is holding open auditions for the role of public-address announcer at the Bulldogs' home basketball games this season. Veteran mic man Sam Evans is retiring after 27 years as the PA announcer at McAlister Field House.

The audition is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 24 at McAlister Field House. Applicants will "test their voice and excitement with introductions and script reading," a release from the school said.

The Bulldogs, including senior guard Morabbi, will have 14 home games this season, starting Nov. 16 against Clemson.

The Cedar Rapids Kernels hold open auditions for PA Announcer

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Cedar Rapids Kernels will be holding open auditions for their gameday public-address announcer and on-field host on Sunday, Oct. 16 from noon-4 p.m.

Auditions will be held on the field (weather-permitting) and in the press box at Perfect Game Field.

All auditions must be done in person. Previous experience is required and all interested in auditioning must download and complete a short application that will be turned into the Kernels by Oct. 14. Auditions will take approximately 5-10 minutes and fans are welcome to attend and vote for their top choices.

The Kernels play a 70-game home schedule that starts April 9 and continues through Sept. 3. The schedule includes games on weeknights, weekends, holidays and weekday noon games.

Augusta, GA- The Paine College Department of Athletics will be hosting its first ever “Voice of the Lions” Contest, Saturday, October 22, at 2:00 PM. The contest will be held in conjunction with the College’s annual PaineFest event and will take place on the main stage.

A few hundred wanna-be public address announcers auditioned at Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn, trying to impress team officials with the sound of their smooth and decidedly New York delivery. Others tried out for the arena host position.

Midway through the second quarter of the Manual-Pleasure Ridge Park junior-varsity football game, Manual quarterback Mason Motley eased back to pass.

David Holton, the public-address announcer at Manual Stadium, can take it from there: “Motley throws it downfield. Complete. To Number 84, Miles Thompson! Forty Yards! TOUCHDOWN, DuPont Manual!”

Before you wonder what was remarkable about that call, understand that the PA announcer is blind. He is also celebrating his third season calling Manual JV football games, as well as his first announcing the Crimson varsity.

Carl Nathe, who works in the University of Kentucky's public relations office, has been the public address announcer at Commonwealth Stadium since 1997. Growing up 45 minutes from Yankee Stadium, he couldn't help but be a fan of Bob Sheppard, who announced at New York Yankees home games from 1951 through the 2007 season. Nathe, who is in his 15th season making announcements at Commonwealth Stadium, might be most noted for his "First down, Kentucky!" exclamation that brings some fans out of their seats.

If so, you must have noticed star players like Candace West or Dana Schwartz, but what about a little love for someone more behind-the-scenes, like the PA announcer?

That coveted position just happens to belong to yours truly, and never has there been a more anonymous job. Not that I’m looking for the spotlight. It’s satisfaction enough to know I enhance the fan experience. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating.

Announcing is a lot like painting walls. (Bear with me here.) Nobody notices when everything is the way it should be, but everybody would know if something was wrong.

To avoid such a situation, I draw inspiration from all of the famous PA announcers through the history of sports: Bob Sheppard of the New York Yankees and, um … that’s all I got.

Bill Drake steps down as Wofford's PA announcer

For the first time in more than two decades, Wofford football will kick off the home schedule Saturday night without the accompanying voice of Spartanburg legend Bill Drake.

Drake’s retirement as the public address announcer at Gibbs Stadium, in the works since early this summer, was made public Wednesday night in a news release sent out by the college. The longtime host of the popular “Awake with Drake” morning radio show on WOLT 103.3 FM has been doing Wofford games since 1988.

Students Invited For Mascot & Public Address Announcer Tryouts in Kentucky

Murray State Athletics will hold open auditions for students wishing to serve as mascots and public address announcers at home events for the rest of the 2011-2012 school year.

The tryouts will be held in Racer Arena, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 27th. Auditions will be granted on a first come first served basis. All candidates must fill out an application before they can tryout.

Students auditioning to become a public address announcer will be required to read a series of scripts similar to those heard at a Racer athletic event. Applicants will be judged on the clarity and volume with which they read the announcements. The announcers that are selected to serve will be the public address announcers at MSU soccer, volleyball, baseball and softball home events.

All Murray State students from any program of study are invited to try out and experience is not necessary.

Scottsdale PA Announcer survives Reno crash

Frank Kingston Smith of Scottsdale has been a public address announcer at air shows across the country for 34 years, including last Friday's air race in Reno, Nevada.

He was describing the event to thousands of spectators when he noticed something was wrong with one of the planes.

Smith estimated that the plane was falling at about 400 miles per hour, and he told everyone over the speakers to get down.

Smith and Steve Stauverkakis, the other announcer, were 70 feet from the site of the crash. 11 people died and 70 more were injured, but Smith remained unharmed.

The game was only 34 seconds in, and Patrick Combs' voice already had a workout.

Set up after a long Taylor Martinez pass on their first offensive play, the Huskers took the lead on a short catch by the fullback.

"Martinez pass complete to No. 48 Tyler Legate," Combs said with his voice rising. "Legate scoring for the Huskers."

Almost on cue, balloons rise into the air, and the 85,110 fans crowded into Memorial Stadium began screaming. For them, Combs is the game's narrator.

But the early touchdown wasn't the beginning of the public address announcer's day. Far from it.

Jay Rokeach the new voice of Florida Panthers

For more than 40 years, Jay Rokeach’s booming voice has been synonymous with the University of Miami’s athletic teams. Whether it’s baseball, football or basketball, Rokeach has become the “Voice of The U.” Rokeach is about to be the voice of hockey in South Florida, as well.

Rokeach has been named the Panthers newest public address announcer, replacing Mitch Phillips. Former PA announcer Bill Murphy will remain in his role as in-arena host. Rokeach called Saturday night’s UM-Ohio State game in Miami Gardens and hopes to remain with the university despite a few conflicts with the Panthers.

High School Notebook: Pre-game music needs to be reigned in

Rick Strunk is more sensitive than most to what can go wrong when you let just anybody wander into a high school press box and play something over the stadium's loudspeaker system.

Coaches and athletes, as a general rule, seem to take the pre-game music played in the stadium as being entirely their option, as if the speakers on the light poles were some giant iPod. They take the liberty of putting on anything and everything they find entertaining or uplifting.

I say they need to rethink this. What you put on a portable sound system that can only be taken in by your ears is one thing. When you're forcing it on paying customers attending an athletic event, that's something else.

Darryl Brace addresses Rider Nation

It's time to introduce the man who's been introducing your 2011 Saskatchewan Roughriders at the start of home games.

Darryl Brace was born in Regina and is now living in Moosomin with his wife and three children. The 39-year-old works as a power engineer for PotashCorp and also owns a local business called B.G's Crafts, Gifts & Home Decor. He has been a committed Rider fan all of his life, holding season tickets at various times.

Brace was previously involved in radio for about 12 years in Swift Current, Regina, Saskatoon and Fort McMurray, Alta. He filled in as a public address (PA) announcer for the WHL's Swift Current Broncos when he was working in the team's hometown, but working as the Saskatchewan Roughriders PA announcer is a huge step up the ladder.

My day as the P.A. announcer at Nationals Park

Last week, when the Washington Nationals faced the Los Angeles Dodgers, I was asked to be the public address announcer for game one of a scheduled doubleheader at Nationals Park.

It was indeed an honor to be back in the booth. But I have to admit I was a little nervous and had the adrenalin going.

After all, I had been the public address announcer for the NBA's Washington Wizards (then Bullets), MLS' D.C. United and at college at Virginia, but it had been a while. OK, they were called the Bullets back then. So, that gives you an idea. Yes, Michael Jordan was still playing basketball in NBA, not owning a team.

But making it easy on me was Nationals public address announcer Jerome Hruska, who could not have been more gracious and helpful as I prepped for the task.

McGahey, Murray Prepare To Replace Alan Cass

BOULDER-Replacing a legend is no small task, but that is the one being asked of Conor McGahey and John Murray as they take over for Alan Cass as public address announcers for the University of Colorado.

Cass served as the voice of Folsom Field and Coors Events Center (and Balch Fieldhouse beforehand) for nearly 50 years. He was recognized during the CU men's basketball team's 67-57 victory over Nebraska on Mar. 5, 2011, as he decided to step away from the microphone and retire.

While neither of Cass' replacements were born when he first began at CU that does not mean they lack experience.

A Canucks' news release this week noted that longtime public address announcer John Ashbridge will be sharing his broadcast location with the veteran voice of Al Murdoch for the 2011-12 NHL season.

The dispatch did not say why and Ashbridge wants to make it clear he isn't being pushed. "It was actually my idea," the Canucks' PA man of 25 years said Friday. "I've never had a designated backup since 1987 and it's time I did. Al (Murdoch), Jon McComb and Stirling Faux have filled in for me in the half-dozen games I've missed over the years. Now I want to scale back a bit. It's just more comforting to have a regular replacement."

Will Kauffman has been the public address announcer for Waynesboro Indians football games for well over a decade, having replaced longtime teacher and PA announcer Louis W. “Bill” Kohler, who performed the duties for more than 30 years.

I just try to be clear, concise and timely in announcing the results of plays and we always hope that we’re accurate in identifying the players making the plays. That’s not a perfect science, so once in a while, we have a grandmother caterwauling at us that her grandson made that tackle, not the guy we announced. If the opportunity presents itself to have fun with the game or any other aspect of Friday night at the stadium, we’re not averse to taking advantage of that. The Rapid City Rush looking for new PA announcer

The Rapid City Rush have begun the search for a new public address announcer for the 2011-2012 season. For the past three seasons, “Sugar” Ray Quinn has been the in-game announcer.

“We want to wish Ray well on his future endeavors as he moves closer to his family in Omaha, Neb.,” senior director of marketing and entertainment John Hess said. “He truly is one of the best announcers in the CHL and has been a great part of our game-night presentation.”

“We are looking for someone who has knowledge of the sport of hockey and will be able to easily step into the position,” Hess said. “Although there is a suggested prior experience for the position, anyone has a shot to apply and audition. There are a lot of technical aspects to the job, and we want to make sure the person we find is comfortable and ready to go for the home opener in October.

“One of the perks of being the PA announcer is getting to experience Rush hockey up close, behind the scenes and help support the best fans in the CHL.”

Chuck Morgan PA Voice of the Texas Rangers - End of the Wave?

Morgan is one of those special people who completely excel at his job. He is a public address announcer, but is responsible for in-game entertainment at The Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. He is most notably credited as being the inventor of the dot race. Back in 1986, sportswriter Jim Reeves told Morgan about a scoreboard race featuring blinking lights that reminded him of a similar race he had done when he worked for the Nashville Sounds. Morgan was inspired to create "The Dot Race," which became a fixture at Arlington Stadium and Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. The race has inspired many other races that would take place in other stadiums on their video boards. I honestly long for the day when "The Dot Race" returns to the video board.

Yes, the same St. Thomas Aquinas that was a renowned theologian and philosopher in the 13th century. It just happened to be the first name that popped into Guin’s mind as he participated in an open tryout to be the next voice of the University of Northern Colorado Bears.

UNC held the open tryouts Thursday for a public address announcer at UNC sporting events this season. Sports public address announcers get a whole lot more grief than gratitude, with the prevailing notion being, "Hey, any monkey could do that job."

I've been to enough sporting events to know that too many monkeys have been turned loose on an open mic in the press box. Give an unprepared amateur a microphone and you're liable to hear anything. I've heard the screamers, the mumblers, the cornball comedians and, worst of all, the careless dispensers of wholesale incorrect information.

Even the best in the P.A. booth are prone to gaffes. Gary Williams, the fine veteran voice who does the stadium announcing for the Raiders, recalled a job he had doing a bowl game at AT&T Park in which his press box position was situated at a very poor viewing angle.

"I can't see a thing!" said Williams as he peered out the window, not realizing the press box mic was on and his complaint was being heard by thousands of fans in the stands. read the full story

Kelly Saunders, the former WJZ-TV reporter who holds the distinction of being the first female to serve as the public address announcer for the Orioles, has died. Sanders, who was 62, passed away early Saturday morning from cancer, according to DCRTV.com.

A veteran of Washington, D.C.-area radio stations, Saunders also worked in radio in Baltimore at WBAL-AM and WIYY-FM. But it was her pinch-hitting appearance for legendary Orioles PA announcer Rex Barney in 1992 that made her the answer to a unique O's trivia question.

Auditions will take place at the L.C. Walker Arena from 4-6 p.m. on Friday. There are no age restrictions. The Worst of PA Announcing

Yep, I knew I'd have to do an entry sooner or later, sure that's the title of this Blog..."The Best and Worst of PA Announcing" It's inevitable, sooner or later it has to happen, I'm actually surprised I haven't had more of these type of entries...maybe I'm protecting our announcing family too much.

I've had a sympathetic attitude towards Joe Buck this year. The Fox Network's lead baseball and football TV play by play announcer has been battling a nasty vocal cord infection so bad that, the first time I heard him this year, I didn't recognize who I was listening to. He has since recovered enough to to keep working most Saturdays on FOX for the 2011 baseball season.

Let's get to the matter at hand shall we? How would you like to be a team pa announcer and know that the MLB All Star game is coming to your home stadium, the club YOU announce for. Then, how would you feel days before the game when the network comes in and informs your game ops people that TV will handle the player introductions, AGAIN?! It happens frequently and other than the team's hometown fans the casual viewer has no idea that the local PA person has been yanked out of his chair and replaced by that night's play by play network announcer.

It happened again last night during the 2011 MLB All Star game in Arizona at Chase Field, home of the National League's Arizona Diamondbacks...I'm not sure who the PA is for the D-Backs but buddy, I am so sorry they didn't use you for the player introductions. Joe Buck butchered the announcements and read this from the Mlive.com's Ian Casselberry:

Despite that, Tigers fans would get to see all five of their guys during the pregame introductions. For many watchers (I'll include myself in this group), this is the best part of the All-Star Game. The game itself can be hit or miss, with memorable highlights often a rarity. But you'll always get to see the players representing your team and city — even if it's just the obligatory spot that every team gets — when the camera follows the All-Star reserves down the first or third base line and introduces them to the rest of the country.

That is, unless the public address announcer screws up the introduction.

The look on Cabrera's face says it all, really.

Somehow (maybe a mix-up of paperwork, distraction, or some other unknown reason), FOX announcer Joe Buck skipped from the Cleveland Indians right to the Seattle Mariners on the American League roster. That led to the embarrassing visual of Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera — one of the best players in baseball — tipping his cap to the crowd as Buck announced, "From the Seattle Mariners, Felix Hernandez."

"What is happening? Who did he just call me? King Felix isn't to my left, he isn't to my right. He's further down the line! You just skipped over six teams! I'm embarrassed for both of us, Joe Buck! That kind of gaffe deserves some applause!"

Unfortunately, Buck wasn't quite done screwing up his introduction of the Tigers' All-Star contingent. Perhaps still disoriented from a bonehead error made in front of a capacity crowd at Chase Field and national TV audience on FOX, Buck seemed to almost forget introducing Valverde. He said "and" before saying Verlander's name, implying that he was the last of the Tigers to be introduced. Nope, he had one more, which he quickly remembered. read the whole story click here

This practice of replacing the regular team PA Announcer with "the network guy" has to stop. Please someone use an ounce of common sense, sometimes it's even a once in a lifetime opportunity for a local, regional guy/gal to jump on the national stage and show his/her chops. Calhoun a steadying voice during craziness at Grizzlies games

A lot of silliness happens between innings at an average Gateway Grizzlies game, as eyeball races and the like generate the giddy laughter of hundreds of kids in the stands.

As play resumes, however, the rich, buttery baritone of public address announcer Tom Calhoun can be heard calling the rank and file back to order.

Calhoun is no minor-league talent, having served in the same position with the St. Louis Blues hockey team since 1987. As good as he is behind the microphone, Calhoun could very well have gone through his professional life never pursuing such a thing.

FHSAA offers PA Announcer clinic in South Florida

The Florida High School Athletic Association has partnered with the National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers to provide a football P.A. announcers' clinic on August 20 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The clinic will be conducted at Barry University.

Football public address announcers and those who want to learn more about announcing football, including students, may attend this summer's clinic. The registration fee is $65 for adults and $35 for students.

Rokeach will share his experience with clinic attendees to help them become better P.A. announcers. Topics covered at the clinic include: the important role of the P.A. announcer; emergency situations; scriptwriting; game announcements, including pre- and post-game; P.A. announcing do's and don'ts; how P.A. announcers and football officials can better work together; and NASPAA and FHSAA P.A. announcing expectations.

Bransfield call is foul, PA Announcer fired from state baseball tournament

I asked tournament director Fred Balsamo the whereabouts of Bransfield. This was the conversation:

Him: "Are you asking me as a former student (he was a teacher of mine in middle school) or as a reporter?"

Me: "Reporter."

Cowboys Bring Back Jody Dean, Ponder Game-Day Presentation Tweaks for 2011

The Cowboys are on the verge of making the final decision to relocate their 2011 training camp from San Antonio to Cowboys Stadium in Arlington...But one change that apparently won't be made this season is the voice of Cowboys Stadium. That said, even the return of Jody Dean as the stadium's public address announcer might come with a couple of tweaks.

"I'll be back for this season,'' Dean confirmed yesterday. "But I might have some company."

The Cowboys, who for years went with the understated, successful deliveries of Murphy Martin and George Dunham at Texas Stadium, are now pondering a second, and perhaps even a third voice in their monstrous home. The organization is currently conducting tryouts, including for a position in the P.A. booth that would supplement Dean's announcements with advertising and promotional content.

"I'd be fine with that," Dean said. "Sounds like a unique idea and the Cowboys are always ahead of the curve."

Prior to joining the Raiders, he spent 10 years as the football P.A. announcer for Stanford University. In his real life, Gary makes his living voicing TV/radio commercials and corporate narrations. He was the announcer at the CBS affiliate in San Francisco for eight years and now records most of his work at his home studio. He is also a popular master of ceremonies at events throughout the San Francisco Bay area.

About the Clinic: The focus of this year's clinic will be on live announcing with feedback. When the topic of legends of Tiger Stadium comes up, it's generally dominated by dozens of players, and justifiably so. But just one voice has helped to guide the enjoyment of the millions (and millions) of fans in Death Valley: Dan Borné.

He has served as the public address announcer in Tiger Stadium and the Pete Maravich Assembly Center for 25 years, though that is just part of his long association with LSU. A graduate of the Manship School,who received a master's degree in mass communication in 1998, Borné was recently honored with the T.C. Shields Award, sponsored by the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation, given to an alumnus for their outstanding volunteer service to the school.

Anyone who sits down and talks with Valley College student and 2011 baseball public address announcer Gary Teague, will find it difficult not to crack a smile. Not because it is soon apparent that the life-threatening disease Teague suffers from has affected his entire life and all of his mannerisms, but because Teague's confidence overshadows his handicap, and he smiles every day … no matter what.

"It's kind of refreshing isn't it?" said Dale Beck, Valley sports information director and football and basketball public address announcer. "He's a real person who just enjoys life and enjoys other people. When you're talking to Gary, there's no hidden agenda."

The Madison Mallards have announced that public address announcer Aaron Sims will return for a seventh season as the team's booming voice at all home games.

Known for his infamous "Wiener" call on all foul balls, Sims has been with the Mallards since 2004. Sims call reminds the fan that catches the foul ball and returns it that they will get a free hot dog.

"I always look forward to the baseball season in Madison," said Sims. "There's no better place to be in the summer than the Duck Pond. I’m extremely excited about all of the changes being made to the ballpark. I know it'll make what is already the best show in sports even better."
