Former Padres P.A. announcer Bruce Binkowski, who handled the team’s stadium mike full-time from 1986 to 1999 after being a backup for 12 years, had several requests for tips from recent open mike tryout candidates.
His advice: “Just be yourself and do your own thing.”
Binkowski admits he’s not a fan of such auditions. “It’s not just about having a great voice... It takes experience and knowledge of the game.” He stresses that handling the mike also requires great timing and an ability to ignore distractions.
Those who told Binkowski, “I used to listen to you when I was a lot younger,” may not pass the “getting to first base” test. The tryouts showed that it also might help to learn proper pronunciation of players’ names. read here
