His heroes were the guys with the stadium/arena mics – the public address announcers whose distinctive voices played in the background.
There was John Condon, the 40-plus-year Madison Square Garden announcer, and Bob Sheppard, with the Joe DiMaggio-to-Derek Jeter Yankee Stadium career.
VanMeter can do a pretty fair imitation of both men.
But the 63-year-old Croton resident is his own man with mic in hand.
This year VanMeter marked his 50th year as a sports public address announcer.
