Up in the rafters with IceDogs PA announcer Rod Mawhood
It’s IceDogs hockey night in St. Catharines and public address announcer Rod Mawhood has arrived for work in the main lobby of the Jack Gatecliff Arena. It’s 4:40 p.m.
The six-foot-five St. Catharines native is wearing a blue suit with a gold shirt and matching tie. He often wears an IceDogs jersey with his name and the number 07 on the back on game night, but tonight is special. It’s New Year’s Eve.
Rod’s first stop is at the IceDog’s ticket office where he picks up a walkie talkie. “I’ve got to make sure that it is fully charged,” he says. I’ll soon find out why. He also picks up his 11-page script for the evening and a summary sheet that lists the order in which items are to be announced during the evening.
