Kevin VanMeter - familiar voice in sports

Kevin VanMeter listened to sports on TV and the radio as a kid.

But while most people heard Marv Albert describing a Bill Bradley jumper or Phil Rizzuto Holy Cow-ing about a Mickey Mantle blast, VanMeter’s focus was elsewhere.

His heroes were the guys with the stadium/arena mics – the public address announcers whose distinctive voices played in the background.

There was John Condon, the 40-plus-year Madison Square Garden announcer, and Bob Sheppard, with the Joe DiMaggio-to-Derek Jeter Yankee Stadium career.

VanMeter can do a pretty fair imitation of both men.

But the 63-year-old Croton resident is his own man with mic in hand.

This year VanMeter marked his 50th year as a sports public address announcer.
