After 20-plus years and more than 1,000 games behind a microphone, Terry BlackLance is ready to step down as public address announcer for Prowler athletics.
The Friday, Feb. 17 girls basketball game against Crookston was expected to be BlackLance’s 1,000th as public address announcer. A schedule change pushed BlackLance’s milestone game back a few weeks to Thursday, March 1, when the girls basketball team hosted Detroit Lakes in Section 8AAA action. Last night’s game at the Ralph Engelstad Arena between the Prowler boys team and Northern Freeze was BlackLance’s 1,001st and, at least for now, final game.
BlackLance has maintained a log of games for which he has handled public address duties. It wasn’t until his oldest son Andrew’s senior year that BlackLance actually stopped to count the number of games he’s announced.
He figured the total would be around 500 and was astonished to learn that it was almost 800. BlackLance hoped to reach the 1,000-mark during the senior year of his youngest son, Aaron, who graduated in 2011. BlackLance reached the milestone a year later than he orignally expected and figures 1,000 games is enough. read the full story
