High school PA Announcers must now follow new national guidelines

CHARLESTON, WV – High school basketball fans may hear a change in how their team’s game is called by the public address announcer starting this season.

That’s because the National Federation of State High School Associations is switching things up.

The West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission is a member of the NFSH. That body has set new guidelines for PA announcers that bans them from saying things such as the number of points scored by a player, the type of foul or violation and even the “emphatic” announcement of who scored a two or three point goal.

The goal of the new point of emphasis is to promote good sportsmanship and make sure announcers are “champions of character.”
